How fees work on Bitcoin
- Bitcoin fees are paid per virtual byte (vB) of transaction size, not per amount sent. Fee = size in vB × fee rate.
- Size depends on the number of inputs and outputs and the address type: a typical 1-in 2-out SegWit transfer is ~140 vB; legacy inputs are larger.
- Miners fill each block (up to 4M weight units) with the highest fee-rate transactions first, so the tiers show what it takes to confirm in ~1, ~3 or ~6 blocks.
- If a transaction is stuck you can bump it with replace-by-fee (RBF) when it was sent as replaceable, or with child-pays-for-parent by spending its output.
- Fees are collected by the miner alongside the block subsidy; nothing is burned.
